Heavy Zend Framework Slam!

Okay, for those of you who don't know any better, PHP is the worlds best programming language and they now have a new "web 2.0" MVC framework. Here is a fantastic description of the Zend Framework and how it compares to less mature (read Ruby on Rails and Django) frameworks.

Oh, and for those who don't know sarcasm, please disregard this post.

Cheers,
Brad

Very Funny V.

Small Business Drama and The Something Store - Violent Acres: "For those of you who don’t know, a business plan is roughly a 20 page book full of made up numbers and estimated profits you could make should you find anyone dumb enough to lend money to you. Although it’s ultimately a book of speculation and bullshit, it is seriously frowned upon to write things like, “[Business name] should be making 10 BILLION DOLLARS A WEEK within 3 weeks of opening!” Apparently, they like it better when you say things like, “[Business name] will net a $40,000 profit in its first year and increase revenue by 20% every year thereafter” even though both sentences were pulled from the same stinky asshole. Furthermore, money lenders don’t necessarily find it funny when you mockingly refer to it as ‘The Book of Lies,’ either."

You Weren't Meant to Have a Boss

You Weren't Meant to Have a Boss: "Working for a small company doesn't ensure freedom. The tree structure of large organizations sets an upper bound on freedom, not a lower bound. The head of a small company may still choose to be a tyrant. The point is that a large organization is compelled by its structure to be one."

I ran across this link this morning. Facebook is *finally* going to have a chat client. Too bad about the Jabber support though.

Autism has a voice and it sounds like my Mac?!

So, apparently, Autistics aren't "trapped in their own world" at all. They are more connected with the world then Non-Autistics are. We have never been able to learn their language, but they can learn ours!!
[Note: unless you're Autistic you probably won't understand the first 3:10 of this video]

Science has traditionally viewed autistics as solitary types. Amanda Baggs is part of the increasingly visible community of autistics who use technologies like type-to-speech software, blogs and online video to reach out to others.
WIRED - The Truth About Autism: Scientists Reconsider What They Think They Know
They aren't isolated from our world, we are isolated from theirs!

All Hail The Google!!!

"MySQL, recently laid out its development road map all the way through 2009, and this includes code specifically contributed by Google, which signed a contributor agreement with MySQL last fall.
...
working with IBM to promote cloud computing to universities, Google is accomplishing two very important goals. It will first put them in touch with every graduate student doing work Google might find interesting ... seeding the technology in the companies where those students will take their first jobs after graduation.
...

[Google] is building data centers large and small around the world and populating them with what will ultimately be millions of generic servers. THAT's when things will get really interesting. Imagine a much more user-friendly version of Amazon's EC2 and S3 services, only spread across 10 or more times as many machines. And as with all its services, Google will offer free versions at the bottom for consumers and paid, but still cost-effective versions nearer the top for businesses and education.

...

[we will all be] totally dependent on Google services in such a way that we'll never, ever, be able to extricate ourselves. We'll be slaves, but happy slaves, and Google will come to dominate all computing for the next generation."

Open standards that will allow avatars to roam from one virtual community to the next.

Free the Avatars - Bits - Technology - New York Times Blog: " I.B.M. and Linden Lab, the creator of Second Life, think it’s time to free the avatars.
...
